Five years ago, I wrote about new regulations from the European Union that governed data privacy online, called GDPR. At the time, these regulations applied only to companies operating inside the E.U. or targeting consumers within the E.U.
Since 2018, four U.S. states have enacted similar GDPR regulations, namely Colorado, Virginia, California, and Utah. In light of these new developments, we recommend all of our customers bring their websites into compliance with these regulations to avoid potential liability.
Today, we announce a free add-on for your simplicity.online website called Simplicity Privacy. This add-on allows users to customize their privacy settings while interacting with your online presence. We also recommend an update to your privacy policy, which we can implement for a small fee.
Business Impacts
Simplicity Privacy integrates seamlessly with your existing website. Still, it provides a way for your users to block tracking (through a popup banner), including Google Analytics or social media tracking pixels, which impacts your marketing efforts.
While there is no bulletproof data on Internet users’ interactions with cookie banners, anecdotal evidence suggests that nearly 80% of users will ignore or close your cookie banner without interacting with it. That said, some impact on your ability to track website users may be unavoidable as privacy laws regulate how companies track people online.
